Within the Common Core State Standards framework, everyone is in the vocabulary business. "When we read, it is through words that we build, refine, and modify our knowledge. What makes vocabulary valuable and important are not the words themselves so much as the understandings they afford." Participants in this class will review current research about best practices for vocabulary instruction, using Marzano and Simm'sVocabulary for the Common Core and Beck, McKeown, and Kukan's Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction, as guides. They will explore academic word lists as well as more domain-specific language, using complex texts to develop several vocabulary-rich student-centered projects.
