For years we have built our reading lessons around primarily fiction stories. Focusing on character development and traits, conflicts and resolutions, and setting and plot. We used fiction to teach children how to make predictions, draw conclusions, and make inferences. Now, there is a major focus on shifting our teaching practices towards a more balanced approach of literacy to include an even 50/50 split between fictional texts and informational texts. Embracing this shift is important. This course is designed to inform teachers of the importance of a balanced approach as well as give them ideas about how to implement this shift into their classroom. It will also introduce clever ways of integrating fiction and non-fiction. Lastly, it will aim to help teachers with instructing students in the area of non-fiction writing.
